David Archuleta Finds His Voice

David Archuleta is 19 years old and already has a memoir. For a normal teenager, this might be absurd. For a Season 7 American Idol runner-up that has recorded three albums in less than two years after a pre-teen bout of vocal paralysis, it’s not quite so ridiculous.

Like many American Idol participants, Archuleta wants to build a career that lasts longer than the hiatus between Fox’s hit reality show’s seasons. So the teeny bop heart throb has gotten busy with a less audible mode of communication: the written word.

Archuleta released his book, Chords of Strength, earlier this summer. He also collaborated on lyrics for his upcoming album, Other Side of Down. For more on the pop singer’s budding career, watch the video interview here…

Helloo to everyone from Nashville. It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog, so I thought it’d be a good week to write one.

I’ve had a really great past couple of weeks! I’ve been on the first leg of a radio promo tour, and it’s been great visiting all the different radio stations and getting to perform again! I started in Greenville, South Carolina for B93.7′s Zoo-A-Palooza to help raise money for the local Greenville Zoo there. I then went to Louisville, Kentucky where I got to do a show for WDJX with other performers like We The Kings, Hot Chelle Rae, Iyaz, and Kris Allen as the host. It was really fun hanging with everyone there. We then made stops at 106.3 in Lexington, Q102 in Cincinnati, WNCI in Columbus, and Q102 in Philly. It’s fun getting to go to all of the different radio stations! We also went to PRO FM in Rhode Island, which is always great going over to see them! After that we went to Sixflags New England for a show with KC 101 where Auburn, Boys Like Girls, Flo Rida, and Bruno Mars performed at too. I must admit that I’m a pretty big fan of Bruno Mars’s stuff. He has an awesome voice. I’m sure you guys know his new song Just the Way You Are, but if you haven’t then you should really check it out.

After all the radio promo, it was time to go to New York for Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day where Shontelle, Allstar Weekend, Demi Lovato, and Jonas Brothers also performed. It was really fun. It was cool meeting Allstar Weekend and hanging with them, and then seeing Shontelle and Demi again. I didn’t really get to say much to the Jonas Brothers, but I did catch a bit of their soundcheck. It was cool getting to sing “Something ‘Bout Love” for the first time live.. period.. lol, then also first time live on TV both acoustically on Good Day NY and then with the energy of the band on AAKD. Hope you guys have been enjoying the performances! It’s also been fun getting to introduce another new song from the album called “Elevator” that I first sang in Greenville. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album and I feel is a good representation of what else you’ll be getting from the album :). More of the David vibe haha.

So… we’ve been getting things wrapped up with the album The Other Side of Down!! It’s been pretty crazy trying to get everything finalized but we’re pretty much finished and have done all we can under the amount of time that there was to work with haha. I’m really excited! We’re a little over a month away from it coming out October 5th, and I’m already starting to feel the anxious and the jitters. I really hope all the work this last year pays off though for all of you! Anyway I am going to end for today, and talk to you guys later!

J-14 caught up with David Archuleta at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on Saturday before he took the stage with Demi Lovato, the Jonas Brothers, Shontelle, and Allstar Weekend. Onstage, David sang his first hit, “Crush,” as well as his new single”Something ‘Bout Love” off of his upcoming album, The Other Side of Down (out October 5). The 2010 Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, held yesterday (August 28) in Flushing, New York, was a great place for the performing artists to connect with fans. It was also a great place them to connect with various media outlets to promote their upcoming projects.

American Idol star David Archuleta and pop singer Shontelle took full advantage of the gathering press, sitting down for multiple back-to-back interviews. Both stars have new albums on the way: Shontelle’s No Gravity will be released on September 21 while David’s The Other Side Of Down hits stores on October 5.

David Archuleta, it’s quite amazing that he’s not yet 20, considering his accomplishments in the music industry thus far. Runner-up to David Cook in the seventh season of American Idol, he was strongly tipped by Simon Cowell to win, but eventually fell short, though he isn’t lagging behind David Cook in terms of sales. He has released two albums to date, the self-titled debut featuring the hit single Crush, and Christmas special Christmas From The Heart.

Some have labelled David Archuleta as a boy-next-door, with radio-friendly pop vocals and not much more, but I beg to differ. He has a mellow tone that softens his voice, it feels very tender on ballads, easy on the ears, but he’s got a slightly vulnerable touch to it that makes his voice stand out from a pool of pop singers. He’s definitely one of the most talented young singers in the industry, and American Idol has helped him in building his fanbase, so we’ll definitely expect him to experience further success.

You Can, the first of these two songs I chose to review, is a soft ballad from his debut album. It’s a typical song of David Archuleta, melodic, slightly raw, a love song. Somehow, even though his songs seem as though they might be repetitive, they aren’t. With every song, he injects a different feel to it, and this song feels very close to the heart, sincerity coating each word he says. I like the light plucking of the guitar strings, they make the song feel very personal, like he’s serenading you alone, and it’s a great feeling he brings across. He handles the high notes easily, taking them as if they were well within his range, and it’s a very comfortable effort from him.

Something ‘Bout Love, the first single from his upcoming album, The Other Side Of Down, which will be released on 5th October 2010, is a more uptempo song, with more accentuation of drums, and the punctuating beats with the catchy melody. It’s a slightly different side of David Archuleta, he has stepped away a little from the mellow guitar melodies, and adding some form of beats to his music. It’s highly addictive, and a great song from him. This album will be an interesting one, I wonder whether the rest of the songs will have a similar vibe, or will he revert back to his familiar mellow roots. Either way, I’d expect it to be a brilliant album, if this song is anything to go by.
